The science of stream restoration is still very young, and has been applied in numerous settings. The art of stream restoration is in applying the science “on the ground”. All stream restoration projects have specific goals, and specific constraints within which those goals must be met. Canaan Valley Institute will present examples of how Natural Stream Design can be used to restore habitat and meet other restoration goals, within a variety of constraints. Examples of design constraints include placement of utilities, desires of landowners, requirements of funders, and upstream or adjacent land use practices. We will present examples of how designs have been adapted to meet project goals while dealing with multiple constraints.
