This presentation demonstrates a model-based framework for estimating stock status and rebuilding times in the absence of catch data or other measures of absolute abundance. The estimator is essentially a statistical catch at age model recast in terms relative to pre-exploitation levels, thus eliminating the need for information on catch. A Bayesian estimation scheme is adopted to allow the incorporation of pertinent auxiliary information such as might be obtained from meta-analyses of similar stocks or anecdotal observations. The approach is illustrated with two recently assessed stocks, goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara) in southern Florida and lane snapper (Lutjanus synagris) in Trinidad and Tobago.
