Design of upstream fish passage for sturgeon

Upstream passage of fish at man-made barriers has been a long standing issue in river systems all over the world.  The techniques used to allow fish passage at migratory barriers varies depending on the species of concern, the region of the world, the size of the river, and the size and layout of the barrier. This presentation will review and compare the standard fish passage techniques and typical design criteria for fish passage facilities on the East Coast and West Coast of the United States.  Focus will then shift to the status of fish passage in the Midwest and how to incorporate the best of the East and West Coast technologies into Midwest designs. The presentation will emphasize passage of Midwest sturgeon and will provide an overview of the methods that are currently being used to pass sturgeon and include a discussion of the key design criteria that should be considered for future sturgeon passage projects.
