National and market research shows American consumers prefer local seafood over imports if given a choice, however, they do not always know where and when to find local products in-season. North Carolina fishermen and processors have begun to employ basic marketing principles to educate the public about the availability, sustainability and quality of local seafood as well as the safety programs that ensure its wholesomeness. This approach has created public and private partnerships North Carolina Sea Grant has fostered to help commercial fishermen create and sustain a market identity for local seafood.
