This presentation will unite two directions of thought regarding fisheries management. The first being an investigation into some aspects of Marine Protected Areas in ocean environments of the United States compared to freshwater management systems. The second being an examination of publication progress for women in the field of fisheries using AFS publication results. The data compiled are from literature on Marine Protected Areas and their creation and or governance, and since there are no similar reserves in freshwater systems, data from white papers identifying research needs in the Great Lakes region. This research also examines the author ship and position of author placement in these documents to determine if, women as valued voices in fisheries, is a viable conclusion.  Analysis of author placement is determined from publications in Transactions since 1980. The change from  small groups (1-3 male authors) to groups of 2 to 7 (male and female authors mixed) illustrates the call to more collaborative efforts but progress for women in the field of fisheries, especially as first author, remains low as does incorporation into executive positions, such as editorial boards.  The presentation will address the value of the female voice in fishery management in the future.
