Lake Winnipeg provides a 7000 tonne commercial fishery for Walleye, Sauger, and Whitefish. During the 130 year history of the fishery Lake Winnipeg has been dammed, fertilized, and invaded by Rainbow Smelt, White Bass, and Carp. The commercial Walleye yield has never been higher than the last decade. Although stock monitoring is slight compared to the Great Lakes, this presentation will summarize trends in the fishery as they relate to changes in hydrology, invasive species, and management; describe current stock status and management; and wonder what a future with zebra mussels might look like.
