The four Chinese native carps, black carp, grass carp, silver carp and bighead carp, are economic fishes of importance in China. The natural resources of these fishes were decreased since 1960s, and their decline was more remarkable after the Three Gorges Dam constructed in Yangtze River. To retrieve the natural resources, some strategies have been acted, including bulding native farms, setup protection areas, fishing banning, fish enhancement, and so on. Genetic conservation is also an important issue for the fishes, and studies have been carried out since later 1980s. Several genetic markers have been used to monitor the temporarily and long-term change of genetic diversity. We reviewed the past efforts about the four Chinese native carps, and discussed the further works.
