Amendments to the fisheries protection provisions of Canada’s Fisheries Act were made in 2012 and came into effect on November 25, 2013. The changes included a focus on fish that are part of, or support, commercial, recreational or Aboriginal fisheries, a revised prohibition against causing serious harm to fish, and a new framework for decision-making related to the fisheries protection provisions.  This presentation will provide an overview of the amended Fisheries Act and related policies of Fisheries and Oceans Canada as they pertain to the federal role in providing for the sustainability and ongoing productivity of Canada’s commercial, recreational and Aboriginal fisheries.
