The practice of fishing, historically a trade synonymous with freedom, is culturally, socially and economically very important for coastal communities. So those who practise this trade today have a duty to do so in a socially responsible manner. For many years, the “Association des capitaines propriétaires de la Gaspésie” (ACPG) has done its utmost to promote sustainable development within the capture industry. Preserving marine resources and all aspects of the marine environment, contributing to air protection by reducing carbon dioxide emissions, and preparing the next generation of fish harvesters are all priorities for ACPG. The association has built a sustainable development philosophy whose key elements have been put forward by its fish harvesting members. ACPG is an association of responsible and modern fish harvesters that inevitably includes social science in its management strategy. It’s planning notably focuses on fishing gear selectivity, energy savings and soon, traceability. This conference aims to show you what today’s fish harvester is truly like, which is a far cry from the negative prejudices that still persist in 2014.
