A Review of a Decade of Research on Haddock Trawls on the US Northeast Coast

Pingguo He , School for Marine Science and Technology, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, New Bedford, MA
Since rapid decline of Atlantic cod in the mid-1990s, and resurgence of haddock in early 2000s, much effort has been made in the northeast USA to design fishing gears that target specific species within minimal bycatch of “choke” species. Several projects by a number of institutions in the region designed and tested various groundfish trawls that target haddock and avoid cod and flounder species. This presentation will review work carried out during the last decade on haddock trawl projects and report progress and current status on gear designs, management measures, and challenges for industry adoption of new technologies.
