Pacific Lamprey Monitoring in Southwestern Oregon
Pacific Lamprey Monitoring in Southwestern Oregon
Under the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife have been monitoring winter Steelhead (Oncorhnchus mykiss) redd densities in Southwestern Oregon since 2003, and as a byproduct of this monitoring, Pacific Lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) redd densities have also been observed. Although our steelhead monitoring (February through May) does not span the entire Pacific Lamprey spawning period it does include their peak spawning and a small subset of sites are conducted through June each year to give some indication of the complete patterns of lamprey spawning activity in this area. Surveys are conducted by walking or floating spatially balanced randomly selected sites. Survey sites are visited at least once every fourteen days. All live adult lamprey and lamprey redds are tallied. This poster will summarize the results of these surveys on several Southwestern Oregon basins.
