Understanding the Hatchery and Genetic Management Plan

The Mad River Hatchery will be the first non-mitigation hatchery for anadromous species in California to have an approved Hatchery and Genetic Management Plan (HGMP) under the 4d rule permit in the Northern Region.  It was developed over ten years in several phases.  The presentation will offer comments and advice about HGMP development, including the best practices for handling listed fish, selective breeding program, spawning protocols, genetic analysis of tissue, rearing juveniles, production goals, considerations for interactions with listed fish in the wild, practical considerations for the facilities and water quality at the hatchery, disease management, record keeping, biological monitoring, timeline for evaluation, ongoing relationships with stakeholders, and the NEPA process for final approval with NMFS.
