The Economic Effects of the Recreational Use of Alchesay-Williams Creek National Fish Hatchery 2009-2013 Stocking

Erin Carver , Division of Economics, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Portland, OR
This presentation provides an estimate of the economic effects of the recreational use of fish produced and stocked by the Alchesay-Williams Creek National Fish Hatchery (A-WC NFH) in the State of Arizona.   Located on the Fort Apache Indian Reservation in eastern Arizona, the A-WC NFH raises four species of trout primarily for Tribal use in Arizona and New Mexico.   The A-WC NFH provides a variety of environmental and ecological goods and services.  By focusing on a subset of these goods and services, the economic effects of the recreational use of hatchery-produced fish is analyzed.  The basic approach is to link the quantity of fish stocked by the A-WC NFH with an estimate of the number of anglers who fished for these stocked fish.  This presentation utilizes U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service stocking data, the White Mountain Apache Tribe Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Division 2005 permit data, and the 2001 Silberman study on Arizona fishing expenditures.
