Identifying Aquatic Vegetation Using Side Scan Soar

Jennifer A. Bock , Information Science and Management, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Tallahassee, FL
Monitoring aquatic vegetation is an ongoing problem for fisheries and lake managers.  Traditional survey methods are time consuming, costly or both.  Although new techniques are beginning to address both of these issues, they do not allow identification of vegetation to the species level.  Recent work with side scan sonar in both lakes and rivers has shown great promise for detecting and mapping aquatic vegetation in an affordable and time – effective manner.
