The National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation has been done every five years since 1955, but the methodology has changed significantly over the decades. It began as a national-only survey of 12-year-old-and-older anglers and hunters using 12 month recall. The latest survey was a state-level survey of 16-year-old-and-older anglers, hunters, and wildlife watchers using 4 to 8 month recall. In-person, mail, and telephone interview modes have each been used at different times. This presentation will summarize the evolution of the National Survey. Survey angler participant and state agency license holder estimate comparisons since the 1990’s will be discussed.
