Improving Fish Habitat Along the Atlantic Coast: Breaking Barriers and Providing Structure

Lisa Havel , Atlantic Coastal Fish Habitat Partnership, Arlington, VA
On-the-ground fish habitat restoration has been the predominant method of conservation for the Atlantic Coastal Fish Habitat Partnership (ACFHP) since its recognition by the National Fish Habitat Partnership in 2009. Operating from Maine to the Florida Keys, ACFHP concentrates on the conservation of fish habitats for native coastal, estuarine-dependent, and diadromous fishes by funding a variety of projects. This presentation will highlight a sample of activities over the years, spanning ecoregions from the headwaters to the estuary. The focus in freshwater systems will be restoration to fish passage, and improvements to estuarine habitat will feature oyster reef and seagrass bed expansion. These projects will be placed into the broader context of ecosystem improvement and benefits to local communities. Finally, current projects, including ACFHP’s first restoration effort in offshore environments, and future directions will be discussed.
