Pacific Salmon Foundation’s Skeena Salmon Program focuses on advancing the implementation of Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s Wild Salmon Policy (WSP) in the Skeena Watershed.  Our approach is to strengthen the technical foundation for implementing the WSP, by strategically expanding baseline scientific information and making it accessible to federal, provincial, and First Nations governments, and industry, environmental stewards, and others.

The Skeena Salmon Program focuses on projects that support implementation of the WSP’s first two strategies: monitoring the status of wild salmon populations and assessing the status of their habitats.  In addition, we have recently developed a number of decision-support tools that make information on the status of salmon and their habitats accessible to, and easily understood by, a broad audience that includes First Nations governments, civil society, and policy makers.

This presentation will provide an overview of the Skeena Salmon Program, our partnerships, and how our work informs management approaches and policy implementation.  We will also provide an overview of recent and ongoing projects, including status assessments for Skeena salmon populations and their freshwater and estuarine habitats, as well as current initiatives to develop an online database for salmon data and an online data-visualization tool.
