Maine is one of very few states which still allow harvest of diadromous alewives and blueback herring, collectively known as river herring. This video showcases the ecological and cultural importance of these fish in Downeast Maine as told by fishermen and other community members who are working to restore and maintain local river herring runs. This video was produced as part of an oral history project carried out by Maine Sea Grant and NOAA Fisheries in the spring of 2014 with financial support from NOAA’s Preserve America Initiative.
