Creating Recreational Opportunities for Communities and Restoring Fish Passage

Brian Elkington , USFWS, Minneapolis, MN
Water is the lifeblood for many communities not just for the value of commerce or for municipalities or drinking water supplies but also holds highly valuable recreational opportunities and its not just fishing. This presentation will explore the rise of whitewater parks and its benefits to communities and potential effects of fishery resources. We will identify some of the issues to consider with increasing whitewater recreation in areas where they did not traditionally exist as well as showcase examples where rapids are utilized to improve a fishery while supplying a community with whitewater and other recreational opportunities beyond fishing.
