Bycatch Analysis of Shrimp Small Bottom Trawl with Modified Mesh Size Codend and Bycatch Excluder Device (BED) in Kendal District, Midle Java and Tarakan, North Kalimantan

Dwi Ariyoga Gautama , Bycatch Coordinator, WWF Indonesia, west java province, Indonesia
The utilization of Shrimp small botttom trawl in Indonesia mostly dominated in  coastal area. In implementation mini trawl operated in another area with different local. Mini trawl have a large number that operate in North Java water and Tarakan Water and has been threatened to juvenile fish population. This study aims to comparing mess size modification and BED in Shrimp Small Bottom Trawl to reducing bycatch that have trial in Kendal water, Midle Java and Tarakan, North Kalimantan.

Based on the result in Kendal water that  compairing codend with mess size 0,75 inch (existing) and 1,5 inch. Use of  0,75 inch have more diversity of catch than 0,75 inch. The utilization with compairing size of BED’s grid with 6,2 cm and 3 cm shows that using 6,2 cm have catch composition Argyrosomus amoyensis (Amoy croaker) 42% and Shrimp 12% and have releasing all the jellyfish, while catch composition using grid with size 3cm dominated with jellyfish 48 %, shrimp 21%  and  Argyrosomus amoyensis (Amoy croaker) 41%. Using BED are recommended in Tarakan water and modified mess size become 1,5 cm in Kendal Water to increasing efficiency of shrimp catch and reducing bycatch.
