OBSERVE THIS! Volume I: A Video Magazine Celebrating the Observer Role in Fisheries Management and Promoting a Higher Level of Professionalism in the Pacific Islands Regional Observer Program

Caleb McMahan , NOAA Fisheries, Pacific Islands Regional Observer Program, Honolulu, HI
The caliber of any observer program is inextricably linked to the quality of data collected by that program’s body of observers. Unmotivated and otherwise uninvested observers can undermine the objectives of any program that fails to engage and reward the ongoing education of its cadre of observers. OBSERVE THIS! Volume I is a video magazine and forum by which observers of the Pacific Islands region benefit and learn from the shared experiences of their colleagues. Each of the episodes in this volume feature real observers sharing real field experiences on topics that include data collection technique, conflict resolution strategy, experiences dealing with protected species interactions, and more. The OBSERVE THIS! Forum not only gives observers a chance to talk openly about and celebrate what they do, but also gives other observers the opportunity to learn from one another’s field experiences. Ultimately, this translates to better data quality and a higher level of professionalism throughout the program.
