Collaboration among fishermen and scientists can lead to innovation and improved fisheries research. Despite the advantages, there is often reluctance and/or hindrances to forming these partnerships for scientific studies. The objective of this panel is to have a candid conversation about the benefits, obstacles, and misconceptions of collaborative research. Panelists, including members from the fishing and scientific communities, will discuss how collaboration can contribute to research, and how to optimally employ this approach and avoid pitfalls. Through this panel, we hope to encourage the integration of fishermen’s knowledge and skills into fisheries research, and to gain a better understanding of how to effectively conduct collaborative research.
