Smallmouth Bass fishing in Missouri Ozark streams is widely considered the quintessential Ozark stream fishing experience by many anglers.  Decades of research and management of this fishery have taken place including studies of fish growth, diet, and habitat.  As a result, fishing regulations that include seasonal harvest restrictions, minimum length limits, daily creel limits, and, specific stream reaches that implement special management regulations are currently in place to provide a diverse fishing experience for anglers.  In more recent years, additional information in the way of exploitation, fish movement related to thermal refuges and angler use and opinions has been collected.  Prior regulation strategies to manage this fishery will be reviewed and how recent information has been used to develop currently proposed regulations will be discussed.
