Grass Carp are viewed in Canada as an equal threat to the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes as the other three Asian carp species (Bighead, Silver and Black carps). In 2012, the Government of Canada announced a five year program to protect the integrity of the Canadian waters of the Great Lakes by preventing the introduction, establishment and spread of Asian carps. Since the program started, 12 Grass Carp have been detected; 6 of those were diploids. These 12 individuals were found in lakes Erie and Ontario. The presentation will outline the program’s risk assessment, research, early warning and response activities with respect to Grass Carp.
