81-32 Sound & Source: Inquiry Based Field Research on the Waters and Watersheds of Puget Sound

Stephen Streufert , Salish Sea Expeditions, Bainbridge Island, WA
Salish Sea Expeditions’ Sound and Source program is an inquiry based field science research program designed to incorporate two cycles of research, one originating at an upland watershed source, the other, exploring a related topic on the waters of Puget Sound.  The vision for the program allows students to ask and answer questions they have about their local watershed, just as they do aboard our 61’ research vessel during their downstream expedition on the sound.  Through classroom visits, teacher involvement and field based data gathering, students will design and conduct two research projects, culminating in a presentation at Salish’s annual symposium for all participating schools, area scientists and community members.  The program will allow teachers to extend and expand the reach of their inquiry-based science facilitation skills to the classroom and local watersheds and fuel our mission of inspiring a passion for learning and respect for the ecological systems that define the dynamic between sound and source.
