122-18 History and Management of Non-native Walleye in Washington State

Bruce D. Bolding , Inland Fish Program, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, Olympia, WA
Walleye were first reported in Washington in the early 1960’s.  Since then, they have spread throughout the main stem of the Columbia River and numerous other waters in the eastern part of the state.  They have created quality fisheries for both trophy and harvest and continue to grow in popularity.  The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife began closely monitoring five of the most prominent populations in 2001 with its Fall Walleye Index Netting (FWIN) program.  This has resulted in more effective management through more appropriate regulations because of the clear picture FWIN provides of the status of these populations.  Even though Washington’s walleye continue to increase in popularity, their future will likely be clouded by illegal introductions and interaction issues with native species.
