54-1 A Categorization of Nature-Like Fishways Worldwide

Nature-like fishways are being constructed worldwide as a fish passage option that has the potential to enhance aquatic habitat as well as pass a large variety of fish species and life stages.  The design philosophy for these fishways is ecologically minded, aiming to achieve a good fit with the specific riverine environment they are constructed in.  This presentation will take a look at the large variety of nature-like fishways that have been constructed around the world, based on a selection of over 100 constructed nature-like fishways.  Different types of nature-like fishways will be discussed, from bypass channels that circumvent a dam to rock ramp fishways that are constructed such that the fish can swim over the dam crest itself, as well as a multitude of hybrid nature-like fish passage solutions.  The examples will be categorized by type of nature-like fishway based on the structural elements of the design used.
