The U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Reclamation's Tracy Fish Collection Facility in central California was designed and constructed in the mid-1950's to divert, collect, hold, and return wild entrained fish to the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Fish are diverted from entrained flows using a two-tiered louver bypass system that guides entrained fish into large collection/holding tanks. This system was designed to guide juvenile chinook salmon and striped bass in a tidally influenced system but today is also faced with the challenges of threatened and endangered fish entrainment and high vegetative debris loads. The facility annually handles millions of fish comprising over 50 species.
