P-473 Sharing Fisheries Research Data in the Classroom and Beyond: Outreach Strategies for Diverse Audiences

Susanna Musick , Virginia Institute of Marine Science, Gloucester Point, VA
Fisheries scientists are increasingly encouraged to share their research with diverse audiences.  Both funding agencies and universities require researchers to expand the dissemination of their results as a broader impact component of research proposals.  Communication strategies for sharing these results should be tailored for each audience by taking into consideration the most effective and appropriate dissemination methods and content. Scientists should incorporate the learning cycle, Bloom’s taxonomy, discussion techniques, presentation of data, audience priorities and vocabulary when developing outreach materials.  Here, various outreach communication strategies will be highlighted with a specific example illustrated from the Virginia Game Fish Tagging Program research data.
