T-6-7 Clams and Clammers in a Jam: Climate Change and the Atlantic Surfclam Fishery

Tuesday, August 21, 2012: 9:30 AM
Meeting Room 6 (RiverCentre)
Bonnie McCay , Human Ecology, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ
The Atlantic Surfclam fishery of the northeast Atlantic coast has been analyzed as a coupled human and natural system, focusing on responses to perturbations linked to climate change.  The talk will report on the interdisciplinary effort required to understand coupled social-environmental systems, which has led to significant modeling achievements,  as well as on results of ethnographic observations of the research process.  The latter includes the research team's interactions with the fishing industry, scientists engaged in stock assessment, and resource managers.
