A successful professional career depends on many factors including important skills that are not usually taught in formal education but rather learned on the job. In the long run these skills may be just as important to career success as those learned through formal education. Our premise is that being a good listener is key to becoming a good fisheries professional and leader. Good or effective listening skills can be learned and mastered but often neglected or undervalued in our fast-paced, information age. This presentation will address the benefits of developing good listening skills and how good listening skills can help advance your career. Good listening skills can improve other related skills important in leadership, including meeting management, facilitation and resolving conflicts from opposing views. The wisdom of employing good listening skills will garner the respect and recognition from your colleagues. Perfecting those listening skills will help you better manage meetings, assume leadership roles and more effectively resolve conflict- the marks of a seasoned professional and leader.
