Linear project developments (pipelines, transportation corridors, railways and transmission lines) result in the requirement for numerous freshwater watercourse crossings of both fish bearing and non-fish bearing streams. Current assessment methods and requirements focussed on mitigating potential effects to these streams are inclusive of; construction methods and mitigation measures (sediment and erosion control measures); post construction monitoring requirements; crossing site restoration and compensation development. The potential effects of linear developments on native fish and fish habitat are discussed within the context of regulatory requirements, regulator expectations and best management practices, as they vary between Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon.
