Anadromous Fish as the Great Integrator of Inland and Marine Systems

Jim Martin , Berkley Conservation Institute, Mulino, OR
Anadromous fish are the perfect example of species that depend on integrated management and science to conserve successfully.  An understanding of the freshwater or marine ecology alone is insufficient.  As the climate changes and the human population increases worldwide, all fisheries management will become more challenging....but the managment of anadromous fish will become even more so.  The prospects for decoupling freshwater and marine productivity are daunting and managers should deploy monitoring systems to identify early warnings of these and should have already developed potential strategies to respond.
