Are Marine and Inland Ecosystems, Fisheries, Management Strategies and Governance Structures Really that Different?

Steven J. Cooke , Biology, Carleton University, Ottawa, ON, Canada
On the surface it is easy to think of the many differences between marine and inland ecosystems and their management. Indeed, many academic departments, government institutions, scientific conferences and even journals are arranged such that they cover only one realm of the marine-inland divide.  However, when one digs deeper it becomes apparent that there are indeed a number of important similarities such that there is great opportunity to share ideas and concepts across realms.  This presentation will provide a summary of some of the key differences and similarities between the ecosystems, fisheries, management strategies and government structures in marine and inland waters.
