Freshwater and Marine Fisheries Management from State, Federal and Private Conservation Perspectives

Eric Schwaab , Conservation, National Aquarium, Baltimore, MD
The presentation will offer a series of reflections related to fisheries management challenges and opportunities across aquatic boundaries, focusing on both habitat conservation efforts and fisheries management systems and structures.   Drawing from experiences in managing fisheries at both state and federal levels, in addition to working on fisheries issues from a non-govenmental organization perspective, the presenter will discuss agency perspectives, stakeholder interests and regulatory drivers across marine and inland systems.  Using experiences in managing Maryland's freshwater and marine fisheries, managing the National Marine Fisheries Service, supporting Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts, and developing the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture, the National Fish Habitat Action Plan and NOAA's Habitat Blueprint efforts, the presenter will discuss common elements that establish a foundation for successful habitat restoration and conservation programs.  The presentation will also discuss lessons learned in application of management systems in both freshwater and marine systems as a means to consider alternate management approaches to solve some of our most challenging fishery management issues.
