Outreach along the Freshwater/Marine Fisheries Continuum: Considerations from Alaska's Yukon River

Katrina Mueller , Fisheries and Ecological Services, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Anchorage, AK
Anadromous fish move along a continuum of freshwater, estuarine and marine habitats. Along the way, they encounter and are affected by a variety of ecological factors, human-related impacts, and management actions. Outreach along this continuum should be tailored to specific stakeholders in a way that’s relevant, goal-oriented, and effective. Major differences between fisheries in freshwater and marine ecosystems and management impact how outreach is employed include visibility of habitat impacts and actions that address those impacts, ability to adequately understand fish distribution and ecology, allocation issues, and management authority complexity. We use the internationally-important Chinook and chum salmon of Alaska's Yukon River and other examples to explore what factors to consider while tailoring messaging and outreach along the freshwater/marine continuum.
