Making Videos for the Web

Steven Sobieszczyk , U.S. Geological Survey, Portland, OR
Effective scientific communication can take many forms. Traditionally, scientists used agency reports, journal articles, and presentations to promote and educate others about their science. Nowadays, in the age of the Internet, other more powerful and far-reaching tools are available to share scientific discoveries. For example, one of the most popular tools is creating online videos that highlight project work. However, just because someone puts something on video doesn’t mean that it will be good. By focusing on a particular audience, purpose, message, and call to action, videos can be developed that are useful and engaging. This presentation provides insight, techniques, and considerations for improving the content and quality of web videos so that the right audience is reached, that a suitable message is clearly received, and that the audience responds in the appropriate way.
