Fishery Agencies, Management, and Conservation in the Yangtze River Basin

The Fishery Bureau of Ministry of Agriculture of China is in charge of overall fisheries in China. Under the Fishery Bureau, there is an Office of Fisheries Law Enforcement for Yangtze River Basin (The Yangtze Office). The Yangtze Office is in charge of fishery law enforcement and aquatic resources conservation for the Yangtze River Basin. Under the Yangtze Office, there is a Yangtze River Basin Fishery Resources Management Commission (The Yangtze Fishery Commission) who is coordinating the 13 Yangtze provincial fishery agencies and related institutions in conserving aquatic resources in the Yangtze River Basin. Major fisheries management and conservation in the Yangtze River Basin includes: Spring fishing ban, special harvest species management, illegal fishing management, law enforcement ships management, fishery resources and environmental monitoring, aquatic resource stocking, river-lake connection, ecological adjustment of the Three Gorges Dam operation, conservation of endangered aquatic species, nature reserve management, environmental evaluation of fishery related engineering projects, water pollution events management, fishermen subsides, and scientific communication and international collaborations.
