This paper describes the fundamental skills and competencies of leadership as they relate to the importance and significance of an organization's human resources in the context of natural resources conservation.  The emphasis will be on those aspects of leadership most important to developing human resources in a natural resource conservation organization.  The aspects of coaching, mentoring, rewards, recognition, and career planning are of particular importance.  In the paper I also discuss why is of utmost importance within today’s conservation organizations to recruit, hire and retain a diverse and inclusive workforce.
