17-4 Case Studies in Commercial and Recreational Fishing: Communication, Problem Solving and Appropriate Decision Making Are Necessary for Effectively Managing Fisheries Resources

Eric Schwaab , National Marine Fisheries Service, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Silver Spring, MD
Successfully managing fisheries resources for the long-term benefit of fish and humans alike can be difficult and daunting –especially in the face of competing interests and increasing demands for fisheries resources.  Successfully balancing ecological concerns without impeding economic growth requires communication with stakeholders and partners; the ability to problem solve; and the willingness to make decisions that ultimately will not satisfy all parties involved.   Although management decisions are made by state, tribal, and federal entities, open communication and collaborative decision-making with entities in the recreational and commercial fishing industries are essential.   The successful implementation of management plans and programs to protect and restore fish populations can be difficult without the cooperation of recreational and commercial industry interests.  However, the agencies responsible for protecting fisheries resources must have the ability to bring these interests together and make decisions that are mutually beneficial now and in the future.
