Biosecurity is a common term used in private, commercial and governmental fish production operations. By definition, hatchery biosecurity can be considered control measures that stop or limit the spread of harmful organisms to fish, the hatchery infrastructure and the environment. While a common term in the current fish culture vernacular, the parameters surrounding specific biosecurity projects and how they are applied to fish hatchery design and construction vary greatly. These parameters include items such as disinfection strategies, isolation and quarantine facilities, protocols, HACCP plans, equipment and other terms. A review of specific design approaches taken for fish hatchery renovations and construction projects relative to fish hatchery operation in public hatcheries will be presented.
